“Jyotish Vedang” is the fourth segment out of six segments of Vedas. It is the world’s oldest Sanskrit text of Indian astrology. It is one of the most important gifts of Hindu Vedas to the mankind. In Sanskrit language, it is called “Jyotish”. Regarding Jyotish, its place and position in the Vedas here is a famous Shlok -
“Yatha Shikha Mayuranam Naganam Manyo Yatha,
Tavadvedangshastranam Jyotisham Murdhani Sthitam.”
This shlok indicates that “Jyotish” (Vedic Astrology) is the best segment of the Hindu Vedas. Jyotish shines like Mayursikha and Nagmani. ‘Jyotish’ controls the seed stores of the Vedas and nourishes the seeds to make them fruitful and beneficial to the mankind. Therefore those, who have its deep knowledge, get salvation along with timely Dharma, Artha and Kama locations in life. Here is one more Shlok -
“Jyotishchakre Tu Lokasya Sarvshyoktam Shubhashubham,
Jyotirgyanam Tu Yo Ved Sa Yaati Parmam Gatim.”
It tells that Jyotish Chakra (Chart) defines auspicious and inauspicious facts of life. Therefore the people, who care and study Jyotish, the science or knowledge of time, follow Dharma (Religion), earn Artha (Wealth), enjoy Kama activities (Desires) i.e. all the fun and pleasures, lastly obtain Moksha (Salvation) in life. the zodiac is divided into 12 bhavas (houses). Just as the proper motion of planets is reflected by their degree positions in rashis (signs), the diurnal (illusionary, relative motion of the planets as perceived from the Earth) motion of the planets is shown by their placement in astrological houses. The houses represent the various areas of life. The planets and signs that occupy the corresponding bhavas (houses) will affect those areas of life. The twelve bhavas (houses) represent the totality of the existence as experienced by a human being. Here are the main significations of each house:
